Headland 1 - Looking to Bolus Head from St Finian's Bay

I was in Belgium from Monday to Thursday. Just three nights. And although I brought a small sketchbook and a few pens, I didn't sketch at all. I think I'm resigned to the fact that those trips are not conducive to sketching. So I brought my kindle and I read a good bit. And I listened to some Tara Brach podcasts and a Bilateral Stimulation playlist on Calm. It was all good.

When I go away, even for just a few days, sometimes it can be hard to get back into the flow of my art. But this time, I had taken time to write a few notes in my studio book and I had looked through sketches and my photos from locations in the West of Ireland. I created a new Google Photo album called Headland. I wrote a few words about what I wanted to express.

So when I painted today, I had a good idea of what I wanted to do. I wanted to use the painting I did last week, that I felt was amorphous.  How to get from A to B was another question. I had thought of Sumi ink or collage. First, I lifted a good bit of watercolour from sections of the original, but I had used Phthalo Blue, so I knew that some colour would stay. Plus oil pastels, which nothing could cover! Then, just as I started, I decided to go for gouache, probably because one of the sketches I was using had gouache in it and I liked the effect. Pushed the darks and got rid of white marks that were too regular with some Neoart and also added a little bit of black with a Pilot Parallel pen.
