Ukraine festival in Dublin

So we had two events for Ukraine a couple of weeks ago - on the 24th August, a march from the GPO to the Ukrainian embassy in Ireland. Then on Saturday 27th, a festival held in Mountjoy Square, with food, dance, singing, face painting, information. It was a glorious afternoon, and the park was packed. Everything was so well organised, it was a real joy - even the sound level from the stage was perfect, not too loud, but clear. It took me a little while to find a rhythm, with so much going on all around. But I did manage to incorporate a lot of the things that caught my eye into the sketch. Drawn on location. Added colour with markers when I got home.

There are currently 48 thousand Ukrainian refugees in Ireland. It's hard to imagine what life is like for them now. Some have found good host families. Some are still moving from one temporary accommodation to the next. Ukrainian children somewhere in Wexford don't have a school bus to take them to school, because it seems that on top of a housing crisis, we also have a school bus crisis. And the war continues to rage back in Ukraine. Every single one of these refugees knows someone who has died or has suffered immensely already. And yet, they manage to pull together and create so much positive energy! Would we be so brave and so positive if the roles were reversed?
