One step removed

I'm not sure "one step removed" is the correct expression. What I'm trying to say is that I paint better if I'm not painting directly from the photo I took. That is, if I paint thumbnails first, or draw with a graphite stick (which I'm enjoying a lot lately!). And then paint from that. I can be more free (is freeer a word?), less attached to the literal view.

This piece here is an example of what I mean. I've gone with completely different colours from my original, because I painted this from a graphite thumbnail, without even looking at the photo that I used originally to inspire me. It's got an energy that I love. Although I did like the original too. But it's becoming more abstract, and ultimately, that's what's interesting me.

Done in direct watercolour on a Seawhite of Brighton accordion sketchbook, using ultramarine, burnt umber and cobalt blue. With a tiny bit of blue pencil added. Just because it made my heart jump!
