New sketchbook, new challenges. I just finished my medium-sized Stillman&Birn Alpha sketchbook and I'm now starting in an A4 hardback Seawhite of Brighton book. It was a windy day, our first cold day. It's the end of August, and we've had some lovely weather. Just saying that holding the sketchbook was a bit of a challenge with the strong wind. Also the paper is a bit thinner, and I can see marks on the back of the pages, so that might be a bit tricky for me, as I normally sketch across the full spread. Maybe I will learn to sketch on one side alone, or skip pages? Or turn it into a studio book? But I like how the media I use behaved on the paper, ink, colour pencil, markers, and even watercolours. I might try it for a few weeks and see how I feel then.
So this is main street Dundrum. It lacks a nice café, but there are plenty of very sketchable angles and stories to tell. Callaghan's is a business that specialises in graduation gowns. Unfortunately, their window was empty the day we were there. But it was lovely to meet the owner, James Callaghan, who was so thrilled to see us sketch his shop. And I thought of them again when me and Brendan went for a walk around UCD and we took a photo of two young women from Ethiopia who had graduated and were wearing their gowns!
