On the Saturday, we were still sketching in the old Lyon, but on the other side of the hub. I started at the end point, near the station. There was a beautiful building in this typical dark salmon orange colour, lots of chimneys, an interesting name for a café, a printer shopfront and a bicycle rental machine. So that's what I sketched.
Then I went around St Paul's church. There was a green campervan and a tree. I had to move for shelter due to a sudden heavy downpour. I incorporated the feeling of rain into the sketch.
After lunch, I caught up with Louise and the gang. I had to sketch some of them. They were not all happy with the result, although I think I did pretty well
That was enough socialising for me. I retreated to one of the inner courtyards that Lyon is famous for, with Galerie Philibert de L'Orme. I wanted to sketch it all. So I did. Looking straight up towards the sky. My sketch won't mean anything to anyone but me. But that's all that matters. I don't sketch for publication or fame. I want to record how it felt for me to be in a particular place, at a particular time.
At that point the sun came out, and I decided to sketch a window with a plant sitting precariously on the window sill. The shadows captivated me and I got my watercolours out and did a quick direct watercolour.
