A bed of roses

You kind of had to be there. The finished painting doesn't do justice to the bright light and the soft colours around this flower bed, this bed of roses actually. I managed to get a soft, sage-like, green by adding Lavender to my Cobalt Blue/Hansa Yellow/Monte Amiata Natural Sienna mix. Was delighted with that discovery! And also with the realisation that painting figuratively isn't me. It's not a case that I can't paint a good realistic flower (I can, actually). It's just that I don't want to. But it's hard to lean towards abstraction when you're en plein air, the birds are singing, the sun is shining, and the roses are there, right in front of you!
