Going darker? Or lighter?

When what I intend to do doesn't work out, it's easy to fall back on what I'm comfortable with!  Anyways, just like Claude said, it's all about timing. I spent a lot of time holding my paper at just the angle it needed, and I watched as the water carried the pigment through. I might flush that dark tomorrow and see what happens. It became shiny in parts, which I really don't like! And note to self, pick up stray hairs (from our cat I suspect) before the paint dries darker around it!

When collages prompt ideas

Collage from one of my sumi ink experiments. I do love that dark, I have to say. I'm not normally too interested in tonal contrast (I think it's an autistic thing in me - most human eyes are attracted to tonal contrast, I just like colours). But there's something here that speaks to me.

Deconstructing and reconstructing some more

I cut up two of the experiments from earlier, and when I put them together again, I had four very abstract landscapes. Let's see where these will take me next.

Journey in ink

Value studies in ink. I have zoomed in on one of the photos I took near Ballinskelligs in February. I'm still very specific about the location I'm painting, but by zooming in, it becomes both specific and universal, which is what I am trying to express in my art at the moment. How to capture a whole world in a small painting?

These two I probably will cut up and reconstruct

And this one is just a watercolour wash. Maybe I will add ink on top and see what happens.

FYJ Week 6 - fix an old painting with tonal value

Before and After. Went back over a little piece I did years ago. Just strengthened the darks and it's made a huge difference already. It’s one of those things that I thought I knew, but it only really makes sense when you apply it to a painting!

FYJ Week 6 - Representational

One view, infinite possibilities. After a couple of days of no painting due to a cold, I did the representational version. Trying to influence the mood and guide the eye. I think I might do some more next week. Watercolour. I added gouache to one of them. Exploring gouache is on my list of things I want to do. Some day.

FYJ Week 6 - Day 1

I’m travelling at the moment, but a black pencil was all that I needed to experiment with this Week 6 assignment! Infinite possibilities!

Value studies - retroactively applied

I applied the Value Study app to the thumbnails I did earlier. This is the one where I'm happiest with the value contrast

But if you look at all four of them, there are interesting shapes and values in the others too!
